When you were growing up (or if you are still growing up!) and were asked what you want to be when you grow up, did you ever say a spy? Yes? We thought so! And that’s why Edinburgh International Science Festival have set a secret agent challenge for you. The Science Festival aims to inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the world around them. They also want you to discover and design your own world by…
Making up your own secret code. Could you do reversed alphabet code so A is secretly Z and B is Y etc? Or use an Alphabet grid and use the coordinates in a sentence? Whatever you do keep it between you both! What secret conversations can you have? If you aren’t working with anyone in particular could you write a short letter to someone and send them a decoding key?
If you have a bit more time…
Play with codes to set up a unique treasure hunt for your partner. Use your new code to write instructions that can be decoded to lead to the treasure!
Did you enjoy having a secret language? How did you use your secret code? When do you think it’s useful to use code?
Share a coded sentence with us and @EdSciFest on twitter and we can try decode them! You can share on our website dothinkshare.com and/or on your social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
