After 12 years as Founder and CEO of 64 Million Artists, Jo Hunter will be moving on from the role. “I am so proud of everything we have achieved, and still equally as passionate about the ability of creativity to make change but life looks very different for me than it did 12 years ago and I am ready for a new chapter with flexibility to learn, grow and flex my own creativity.”

It has been a challenging couple of years for anyone running a social enterprise. Grants are hard to come by, and whilst our creative facilitation and training work continues to thrive, it has become more and more challenging to support our public programme in the face of difficult financial circumstances.

In this moment of reflection, and with Jo moving on, the board and team have taken the difficult decision to close our public programme. The 2026 January Challenge will be our last.

We are immensely proud of everything we have achieved. We have helped over 750,000 people reconnect with their creativity; supported a change in cultural policy with our Everyday Creativity and Cultural Democracy in Practice reports; significant research into the impacts of creativity and supported hundreds of communities, organisations and individuals make change along the way.

What’s next?

Our company culture will remain long beyond the end of the public programme. 64 Million Artists will continue to deliver its thriving creative facilitation and training programmes for clients.

We are so grateful to you for being on this journey with us and we are excited to work alongside you in this final phase of the public programme to use creativity as a change making tool.

We know that this news might feel hard, especially if you have enjoyed The January Challenge over the years. As a team, we are committed to sharing the 2026 resources as widely as possible and will support our brilliant online community and other communities across the country to self-organise for 2027 onwards! We’ll be launching the 2026 campaign soon, and as always, are really keen to hear from you.

Please do get in touch with any ideas, suggestions and reflections as we prepare to end this era of The January Challenge in 64 Million Artists style – celebrating the voices of as many people involved as possible.

Taking August Off

Every August, 64 Million Artists pause for the summer. ⏸

Rest can be a radical act. It goes against everything capitalism stands for. In 2023, we boldly decided to take August off as a team - to reflect and rest after navigating the pandemic and burnout.

If you want to know how it all started, one of our team members simply forwarded a thought piece penned by Brené Brown to our founder with a cheeky “…I'm just leaving this here."

If you don't ask, you don't get.

As a team, we agreed to repeat August Off every year. If we’re well rested, we can do our best for our communities and be more intentional and present.

We also sat around a table and discussed what rest means to each of us. We discovered that it looks wildly different to everyone. There are plenty of different ways to rest, and not one solution fits everyone.

For us, in addition to allowing a deep moment of rest from the treadmill of work and life, it’s about the opportunity to be present in other areas, including different parts of our creativity. Team members may also have caring responsibilities, children, are managing chronic illness, or want to spend quality time with family and friends. Weekends are great, but they are often filled with life's invisible or unpaid work, which doesn’t always allow enough time for rest or reset.

We understand that it’s a privilege to have the chance to work this way, and we know that it isn’t available to all right now. However, for some organisations, the opportunity awaits.

A Year of Creative Courage

2024 is going to be my Year of Creative Courage.

I regularly tell the story of how 10 years ago, when I found myself experiencing burnout and panic attacks, I took a month off work and got different people to set me different creative challenges to do each day. It was a fork in the road for me, a moment where I faced up to my inner perfectionist, chose my creativity instead and founded the business that I am now running successfully 10 years later.

That story is all true. But of course it’s not the whole picture.

Over the last 10 years things have changed significantly. That business now has 10 people in it. I got married. And I had 2 kids. So that infinite time to explore, to dream, to think about possibilities has significantly reduced. I am no longer in my early thirties wondering how life might turn out. I feel like I am right in the middle of how it’s turning out and it is HARD (alongside all the good stuff too).

As I’ve navigated the changes that life has brought me I’ve been so grateful for the groundwork I laid 10 years ago. I know I have been easier on myself as a mum, I have been better at talking about what's happening, running the company has brought me so much joy. I have also been more nurturing of others, more able and willing to switch my perspective and on the whole, that background anxiety I carried around for at least 2 decades has significantly quietened.

But my day to day responsibilities feel like they have taken up a lot of the space I had in my head for creativity, and I feel detached from my body and instincts because I’ve neglected them.

Years of prioritising the needs of others, in a way that I feel has worked for a time, and has laid the groundwork of a culture of care at work and a loving family at home has left me feeling proud of everything that’s gone before, but unclear about what’s next.

At this moment I feel called to return to my creativity. Anyone who knows me, knows I advocate for being able to squeeze creativity into the tiny moments, into the cracks of light, to embed it alongside the challenges of everyday life. And I still hold absolutely true to that. But for me the time has come when I have been topping up for so long I have forgotten what it's like to really fill up - to deep dive back into who I am, what I stand for, the essence of creativity for me.

Practicing creativity brings me courage, but it takes courage too. For me that’s the courage to say ‘My creativity is important. I am important. Nurturing my ideas matter.’ That taking time for myself doesn’t have to mean I think I am ‘more’ important than others. In fact, it means I will have the energy and ideas to continue championing others, to speak out loudly for what I believe in and to invest in an amazing team to support the realisation of their ideas. The little voice in my head saying ‘that’s selfish, pipe down, crack on, stay busy, that’s where you’re useful,’ is a hard one to ignore, but in order to keep going, I have to.

So I am choosing to ignore those thoughts and instead do what I need to do. For the whole of 2024 I will significantly reduce my client-facing delivery for 64 Million Artists. I will take a total of 4 months off, some as longer periods, some as short bursts. At least once a week for the year I will create boundaried time to go for a walk with, or do a creative challenge with, or have an uplifting conversation with someone who I admire, someone who pushes me out of my comfort zone, or someone I want to get to know. I will be courageous in asking people for this time, and in holding it, because I have to be; In service of the next 10 years.

I’ll talk and write about it a bit as I go along. Even though I might feel silly or tired or worthless or, of course, selfish. Creativity for courage, and courage for creativity. That’s my ambition for 2024. And of course I am starting with The January Challenge. So please join me, and let’s see what happens next…

Nurturing hope and creativity in a chaotic world

It’s that time of year again when we begin to prepare to launch The January Challenge. It is the time of year when I marvel not only at my team’s skill and expertise in crafting something beautiful but, more than ever, the multitude of amazing creativity champions, collaborators, organisations and individuals that contribute to making something so exciting, collaborative, and so magical.

It’s also the time of year, certainly for the last 3 or 4 years, when I think, ‘In a world facing so many difficult challenges, is this what people need?’ There is so much difficulty and pain facing so many people on a micro level in their personal lives, on a systemic level in their workplaces and political systems, and on a global level in the conflict, huge injustices, poverty and mistreatment of people that is hard to hold alongside our daily lives. Is there room for creativity?

But it also has to be the time of year when I am most renewed in our values, in our mission and our belief in people and the world. It reminds me that nurturing creativity is the most important thing we can do. The world is a difficult place to be right now, and for most of us, changing the way the world works feels way beyond our reach. It can feel exasperating, exhausting, and demoralising to look at our place in the world and think, what can we do? But when I stop systemically thinking about the world and instead think of the individual people I see around me and further afield, I feel hope.

I feel hope at the people speaking up and standing up against injustice, hope at the people making a small gesture of kindness to the person next to them on the bus, at the person taking a small step in learning something new, in the parent admitting it's too tough and asking for help, in two people finding common ground when they thought there was none.

It is almost impossible for most of us to change a system from the top down. But we can change a system one relationship at a time. One idea at a time. One moment of holding hope over despair. And that’s what I think creativity does for us. It gives us a moment to believe in something new and imagine how things can be different. And if we practice that skill, we can hold those moments for longer until they become real.

I am an optimist. A believer. Maybe to a fault, probably because my privilege has allowed me to trust and be rewarded in that trust. But I will keep believing in people and the power of people because for every person who wobbles my faith, 100 more renew it. The 50,000 plus people who take part in The January Challenge every year show me the power of creativity, of care, of compassion and vulnerability. I don’t think there is any time more important than now to be creative. To have better ideas about the world, to create connections with people and to motivate ourselves to have courage and keep going.

Sometimes, the smallest acts can be the thing that makes our day. And at the very least, we can hold onto the smallest things when the big stuff is too overwhelming to manage. So, 31 days of small things is what I need right now. And I wonder if you might, too. I hope you’ll join us.

Overcoming perfection

Creativity is...overcoming perfectionism

Ten years ago, my life changed unexpectedly. I was working in a place I loved, with people I thought highly of, making great things happen.

But I felt flat.

My body knew something was up faster than I could work out what it was. I began experiencing panic attacks, couldn't sleep and couldn't do simple tasks like online shopping without feeling overwhelmed.

On the outside, my life seemed pretty perfect - a dream job, great friends, and a lovely place to live. And it wasn’t as if I wasn’t enjoying it, at least on the surface. But somewhere along the line, the obsession with making my life as perfect as possible had taken over.

Becoming a perfectionist can creep up on you, and you might not even realise it's happening. You start by setting high standards for yourself, but soon you’re avoiding doing or creating anything new for fear of failure and constantly being hard on yourself. Until it got really bad, I hadn’t noticed the background level of anxiety I felt every day, just trying to maintain all the plates I had spinning.

So, I first had to stop to work out how to move forward. I cobbled together a bit of holiday, time off in lieu and unpaid leave and took a whole month off work.

During my time off, I asked friends, family and colleagues to set me a different creative challenge each day. It could be whatever creativity meant to them, so as long as I had the resources to do it, I would.

The responses were fascinating and so varied. There were cooking recipes from across the world, growing things, writing, singing, making music, dancing, stretching, and exploring, all of which allowed me to try something new.

As I completed a daily creative challenge over the month, I felt a tiny part of myself open back up each day. Doing something new brightened my day and gave me a fresh perspective. I stopped feeling that background level of anxiety.

I had thought it was essential to do everything perfectly, and I had to excel at something to bother doing it. But one small creative challenge a day taught me that wasn't the case. I felt happier and more alive just by giving something a go.

Failing was the key to my creativity all along.

Working in the arts, I had often been told that creativity was something that belonged to a magical group of people we call 'creatives', but this experiment confirmed the feeling I had all along. We are all creative. It's in all of us and has been since we were born. It’s only as we grow up that we start to unlearn it.

You would never tell a 2-year-old that they’re not particularly talented at painting, so they should stop. Or that a 5-year-old’s dance skills are inadequate. Or a 10-year-old’s writing isn’t good enough to create stories. So why do we tell ourselves as adults that being good at something artistic is so important?

Trying to be good at something is often the opposite of being creative. It stops us from playing or trying something out. It shuts down possibilities. Many people want to train, to become skilled in an artistic pursuit, or even to have it as a job. But that doesn’t mean the rest of us shouldn’t do it. Interestingly when we interviewed several people who had a creative hobby, they said they would never want to do it professionally because the pressure would take away their enjoyment.

My favourite dictionary definition of creativity is ‘the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules and patterns and make new ones’. So when we think about calling some people creative and others not, it speaks to more than who is handy with a paintbrush. It says some people can break the rules and other people can’t; some people can make the rules, and others can’t.

To me, that is what is vital about creativity. It’s not a "nice to have". It’s a fundamental part of who we are. It allows us to imagine new futures and dream up a different world. And I don’t know about you, but right now, I think that’s what we need more of. New people making up the rules, new ideas coming out of communities, institutions, organisations.

Living in the UK sometimes feels like the living definition of Einstein’s (or whoever it's currently accredited to) famous quote, ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’ And that’s partly because we’re letting the same old people make the rules.

Just imagine what the world might look like if more people had space for their creativity, had more opportunities to share it with the people around them, and if others valued their ideas equally. Might the world be kinder, more innovative, less relentless, more connected, a nicer place to be?

I am not claiming to have all the answers. But I’m interested in exploring the possibilities. Since allowing myself to be a little more creative every day, I have more patience, wonder, and joy in my life. And right now, particularly at this time of year, life can feel so relentless and challenging. So even a little window of something different helps.

We are only a week away from the end of The January Challenge this year. However, there is still plenty of fun, free daily creative challenges that you can take part in to rest, recover and engage even more thoroughly with your communities. Perhaps your creativity could affect change and advance your organisation’s mission.

I hope if we start here with something little every day, we might all be able to give ourselves a break from the relentlessness. To have a moment for ourselves. And we might just start to see a different world emerging, if only from our own perspectives.

Why we’re taking August off as a company

Why we take August off as a company.

Two weeks ago, we decided to give our team the whole of August off. At full pay, with no impact on the rest of their holiday allocation. We're closing the office and taking a rest. Why? Because we need it.

The last two and a half years have been exhausting. Everyone I know is on the edge of burnout. I hear about the huge to-do lists people have and the lack of energy they feel. Bubbling under every conversation I have with friends, family and team members is a shared understanding of the effort it takes to show up every day.

This collective lack of energy might have resulted from a physical illness during the pandemic. It might be from processing other things now happening worldwide or simply because it takes a massive amount of energy to readjust to life outside the Covid-19 bubble.

How did we ever manage a commute, a social life, a family and the million other things life threw at us pre-pandemic?

We need a break.

We need it to process what has happened over the last few years. To reflect, rest and recharge. To be ready for whatever is around the next corner. Most people take two weeks' holiday if they can, but under the circumstances, this doesn’t feel long enough. Especially when you know you're coming back to a full inbox. But a whole month, when the whole of the team are also off and clients know you're all having a break? It feels like it might just work.

I'm not claiming full credit for this decision. One of my senior team, Laura Saxton, and I have long discussed the need for a break. Then a couple of weeks ago, Laura forwarded me this email from the brilliant researcher, author, and speaker Brené Brown. In it Brené outlines her plans for a 14-week sabbatical and her commitment to giving each staff member an additional 4 paid weeks off over the summer. Immeditately on reading it we both thought, why can't we do the same?

Well, there are a lot of sensible reasons not to. We already have a generous holiday allowance, and we close between Christmas and New Year. We already treat our team well and would give anyone time off if they felt like they were burning out. We already work a four-day week (on full pay), which we implemented during the pandemic because we thought it was better for mental health. We found we were no less productive.

But with everyone so exhausted, why wait for burnout before taking a break?

As soon as the idea popped into our inbox, we knew we had to implement it. Our company works to support communities, businesses, educational institutions, and others to develop creative cultures. Our business is to help others create the space for possibility, so to continue to do that well, we had to live our values and create space for our team to do just that. It might seem like a big decision, but it feels easy and obvious. It's the only month when our business would be quiet enough to manage it. The positive impact on the team easily outweighed any minor downsides.

Why wait for burnout before taking a break?

With the decision made, we've spent the time planning, communicating with clients and focusing on making sure we're making the most of June and July. Then when August arrives, we can all relax and not worry about anything we've missed while off. We're going to share what we're hoping to get out of the month with each other and report back so that we can learn from our experiment and hopefully repeat it. Although to be clear, we're not expecting everyone to write a novel, learn a new language or go on a voyage of discovery. Spending the whole month in bed or eating crisps on a sun lounger is encouraged.

As business leaders, we can easily fall into doing things the way they 'should be done', which usually tends to be the way we've done something before. But during the pandemic, everything got flipped upside down, and we had to adapt quickly. And we did. The last thing we should now do is go back to the status quo. We have to keep trying to reimagine things. To listen to what people need and respond creatively.

Of course, not everyone will be able to do what we're doing. We're a company of eight, not 800. We run workshops, courses, and programmes to support people to use creativity to improve their workplaces, community spaces and mindsets. We don't do heart surgery, keep the local shop open, or clean the streets. We know we're fortunate to be able to do what we're doing. But because we can, we are. And I am proud of us for doing that when many won't.

As we enter into this post-pandemic phase (whatever that might mean), it would be easy to try and forget all the hardships, pain and challenge of the last two and a half years. The chance to pause, take stock, and recover feels vital. While taking August off isn't for everyone, finding a way for everyone to pause in their life might help us learn where to go from here and not just try to do business as usual.

Your pause might be a week in Ibiza, a stroll by the sea or binging Bridgerton in your pyjamas. Or you might join in one of our creative Weekly Challenges. Whatever you do to create space, I hope you can rest and take stock.

I'll be putting up pictures, sending a year's worth of birthday cards I'd forgotten to send, calling my friends, maybe reflecting, but mainly sleeping. I'm hoping to come back on the 1st of September, knowing that for the first time in two and a half years, when someone asks, "How are you?" we can all honestly answer, "Good, thanks" and know that we mean it.

How a four-day week is changing our lives!

In 2017 I found myself in a burnout cycle. It’s typical of people in the creative industries. We’re passionate about what we do, so we work hard without enough breaks and blur the boundaries between work and life. Then, suddenly, we can’t manage it anymore, and we crash. I realised something had to give. So, I changed my hours, working 9-to-5 Monday to Thursday and taking Fridays off.

I realised my output didn’t dip with one day off a week. I felt more focused and productive when working! It was life-changing and proved even more so when I had kids. I can now have a whole Friday of guilt-free time with my kids where I know no one is waiting for an email back from me. I’m dreaming of the day they’re at school and I’ll use that time to drink hot tea, relax and dream up bigger ideas!!

We’ve now decided to work a four-day week as a company, with everyone staying on a full-time salary. It’s taken each of us some time to get used to taking Fridays off (and not overworking on the rest of the week to compensate) but we all kept reminding each other to be strict with taking Friday off and now we’re all pros!

We all agree that it’s improved our well-being and motivation! We’re more efficient during our working days and love the freedom a four-day week gives us.

“For me the four-day week is the organisation saying to us we care about you, your creativity and your wellbeing. I feel valued and supported, so I am more motivated and present at work while having time to express myself outside work. Now on Fridays, I can make the most of a quiet swimming pool for a morning swim and cook up an elaborate storm whilst singing along to the radio. It’s a special thing that I hope, as the movement grows, more people can experience.”

“Having the extra day over the weekend is brilliant. I’m able to spend more focused time on my creativity – I’m about to start a dressmaking course on Fridays! It’s wonderful to feel supported at work to take more time for yourself. When Monday comes around, I can take the creativity I have nurtured into the way I work.”

“A four-day working week means I can spend at least one day a week doing something for myself, whether playing music, seeing friends or getting away for a long weekend. It means so much to me that the company I work with values our wellbeing enough to have a four-day week in place. I also have Fibromyalgia, so a full working week and commuting for a couple of hours daily can easily burn me out.
