A new guide commissioned by Arts Council England

We’re delighted to announce the publication today of a brand new 36 page guide exploring how to embed democratic practice within arts and cultural organisations.

Earlier this year, we were commissioned by Arts Council England to write a guide for organisations on the principles of cultural democracy – what it is, and how its values and principles are already being practised. We visited cultural organisations up and down the country to find out how they’re putting people at the centre of what they do, and opening up programming, decision making, creation of work and commissioning to their local communities.

Cultural Democracy in Practice includes practical advice, examples and case studies with plenty of links to further information. The guide is aimed at people in the arts who are seeking to work in new ways; for arts leaders who want to take some first steps towards opening up their organisations to other influences; and for those already engaged in Cultural Democracy, we hope there are some new ideas and tips you might take from our guide.

Alongside this, we’re launching a blog series that will run throughout the autumn detailing further case studies. These will expand on what’s in the report, and also bring in a broader range of organisations.
