"One of the groups I’ll be working with to bring The January Challenge to life is Friends For English - a befriending project to help newcomers, mainly asylum seekers and refugees, to practice English and make new friends in Hull. In a meeting with the group a prominent theme that came up was the idea of individuals' contributions connecting with a larger whole. This is reflected in this prompt."

Create a collage or mixed media assemblage responding to the themes of ‘Peace’ and/or 'Together’.

What does Peace mean to you?
What does being 'together' mean to you?
Who do you like to be 'together' with?
When you are 'together' with people how does it make you feel?

Flick through scrap paper, magazines or newspapers and rip out any images or words that you associate with the theme, and piece together a collage. Do this activity as a group, or individually.

Whilst taking part, think about how we are, simultaneously, individuals as well as parts of larger connected wholes. Much like the smaller bits of individual pieces of material, text, objects...etc. that are assembled, arranged and composed, to make a larger, whole piece, like an assemblage, collage or montage.

I Make Myself Laugh 😂🎭✨
Do something that makes you giggle.
Maybe if you’re working from home you can wear a fancy dress hat or prop while sending some emails or carrying out chores. Maybe you can skip for a bit when walking to the shop. Maybe whenever you pass a mirror that day you can pull a funny face at yourself.
Take a bit of time out of this particular day to make yourself chuckle.
💭 Think about what makes you chuckle. Even when we are alone we can still find that element of play and silliness. I would it makes people smile and feel warmth and cheekiness.

Creative Prompt of the Day:
Character Creation 🎭✨
Take two or three random letters, if you can see a car number plate near you take the letters from that, if not look around your space and take the first letter of the two/three objects you look at. These three letters are initials, for example, 'WP'. Create a name with these initials for example 'William Percy'. This character can be a human, animal or alien, whatever you want.
Now you have the name, you can either draw the character or just imagine what they look like. What is the character wearing? What is their hair like? Are they a smiley character?
Now you have a name and an idea of how they look you can answer these questions on paper, typed up, or just in your head. This will help you to fully form this character and give them an identity.
What is this character's favourite breakfast?
What is this character's greatest achievement?
What do they do for a living?
When was the first time they fell in love?
What is their party trick?
What would they watch on TV?
What is their most treasured possession?
Who is their best friend?
Now you have a character with a back story and personality!
💭 Improvising and answering with the things that come to mind can prevent overthinking the answers. Sometimes we can get overwhelmed when we think too much about creating, improvising is all about just doing, its the 'yes, and'. I would like them to reflect on their ability to make something from nothing and to reflect on their improvisational and creativity skills. I hope they will feel excited and creatively fulfilled by this task.
