Recipe for Change

Creativity is...a recipe for change.

Over the next three week’s we’ll be introducing you to 64 Million Artists newest board members.

We are a not-for-profit social enterprise and we have a board to support us in three main ways:

  • Share our vision and values and be the guardians of these, helping us to stay on track with them if we are in the weeds of delivering our work
  • Broaden our community and bring in new voices, making sure we're thinking about things from different perspectives
  • Keep us accountable on our spending, decision making and processes, ensuring we are being transparent and open in the way we work

“We are very lucky to have an amazing set of people to collaborate with on the board and they are always bringing new ideas and ways of thinking. We make sure that it's a two way street, by also giving them time to get creative, learn from each other and have some fun!” - Jo Hunter, CEO of 64 Million Artists

Let’s discover what creativity means to our newest members through the prompts they set us!

This week, it's over to Michaela Tranfield.

I’ve always found that creativity has an inextricable link with any kind of change in our lives and in the world. We need to be creative in the way we navigate through oppressive systems, in the way we show up for ourselves and others, and with how we connect with our communities.

As part of the intergenerational social action work we do at InCommon, we’ve explored how we can create a better shared future through tackling some of the challenges facing our local communities. One of the activities we did last year was writing mini manifestos, or recipes for change. We explored how greater empathy, care and intergenerational friendships could help the group tackle pertinent issues in their local community like rising crime, food poverty and homelessness.”

Do

Create your own recipe for change.

Think about some of the issues affecting you or your local community.

You could also think broader and look at what is happening around the world that feels pressing to you.

What do you think could be done to change this? Don’t worry if the issues feel too big at first, sometimes the smallest steps pave a way to the biggest impact. We all start somewhere.

Think about how you might want to design the recipe.  What colours, patterns, shapes and textures symbolise resistance for you?

You could add these to your recipe along with doodles and stories like they have on a classic cookbook page!

Maybe you could create a 3 course menu made up of your meals for change. Or you could design the cover of your own cookbook for change.

Think

How might you action these changes?

Could you try to change some unhealthy habits and behaviours?

Could you support local charities, community groups or youth clubs?

Could you write to your local MP regarding the changes you want to see?
