Day 4: Capture Your Day

“This creative prompt has been inspired by the method of Photovoice, a community and participatory research method. It is a powerful communication tool, empowering people and communities to understand and express their lived experiences and stories. “A picture paints 1000 words” and, as such, it can be used to help others understand and connect with issues that are important to you. It is a particularly useful method for expression when, for whatever reason, words are hard to find.”

Don’t worry about taking the ‘perfect’ photo – there’s no right or wrong. We make images using our ability to see, notice and feel the moment. Cameras are simply a tool to capture those images.

As we go from one task to another in our daily lives, we can get caught up in mundanity or miss much of the world around us. This prompt encourages you to pause and pay attention to everyday details you may not have noticed before.

Set an alarm to go off every hour, or at an interval of your choice. Each time the alarm goes off, take a photograph that captures whatever is happening in that moment.

Perhaps you might find it helpful to choose a theme, like a colour or shape to look out for, or perhaps you’ll simply be inspired in the moment. Include yourself in your photos if you’d like to. Importantly, have fun!

Give your photo series a caption or name if you can.

Think

At the end of your day, look at your series of photos and ask yourself:
What story do they tell about your day and everyday world?
Do you notice, think or feel anything different now you are studying your photos to when you captured your images?
Did taking part in this prompt make you feel more connected to yourself and/or surroundings throughout the day?
