"64 Million Artists turned 10 this weekend.
It happened quietly, on a Sunday. I knew it was coming but it also passed me by. It's a funny thing, an anniversary. Because its just a date we registered a company. Before that we had done a project, started a January Challenge, begun to think about our ideas. So is it 10 years, or 11, or less? Did it really start when I went full time a couple of years later? Or hired the first staff member?
What I do know, is that I am hugely hugely proud of what we have achieved. And most of all I am proud of the team that grew it. The most amazing remarkable people who have been part of the journey of 64 Million Artists. Who have stewarded it and shared it and crafted it and held it and made it what it is. We reach well over 160,000 a year with our programmes. Some time in the next year we'll probably turn over £1m. But the things that matter are the daily brilliances that happen because of the people doing the work.
A team is a magical thing and I am so happy to be a part of mine. I just finished my annual review with our brilliant Co-Chair Tina Ajuonuma and as part of it I got some feedback from the team. It's always lovely to receive, but Tina pointed out one thing I'd missed. That a colleague had said I am always led by belief and not fear. And I think that's true.
I believe every person in this country is creative. I believe in the people around me. I believe we can all do brilliant things when we are creative, and nurtured and celebrated and supported. I believed we could make this thing a company. And we have. And I cannot wait to see what the next 10 years brings.
So thank you and happy birthday to Jemima Frankel Yashoda Rodgers Qoy Lawal William Warrener Sam Drew-Jones Lerato Stanley-Dunn Damian Hebron Aksa Saghir Zara Veerapen-Padayachy Alex Eisenberg and to all those who came before (Laura Saxton, Christopher Rolls, David Micklem, Olive Ceesay, Ayesha Fatima, Nafeesa Hassan) and all the many brilliant associates, board, and partners we've worked with. You make it what it is. So I hope you can all celebrate yourself today.. and always. We did a great thing. And there is much, much more to come."
