Please can you introduce yourself
I'm a freelance writer, poet and translator. Most of my work is in Cymraeg (Welsh), and the translation that I do is mainly from English into Welsh. What has basically happened with me is that what was a hobby, writing, became the day job. Working with others, and especially others involved in different fields, helps to remind me that fun and creativity is an important part, the most important part, of my writing.
Where does creativity show up for you and how do you use it?
It obviously does show up in my writing work. It's possible to forget that creativity is the basis of what I then have to work hard on. Outside of work it shows up in being a grandmother of 7, in caring for my elderly mother, and in my garden.
Has your creativity ever led you to any unexpected places or connections?
More than anything I think it's led me to connections with people that I wouldn't have connected with otherwise, and visits to parts of the world I wouldn't have gone to otherwise. But working creatively has also led me to discover unexpected things about myself – fears, hopes, forgotten memories.
What drew you to take part in The January Challenge?I'd done translation work for you in the past, been impressed with the organisation, and thought the January Challenge sounded fun. And I like leading workshops as a counterbalance to the sitting at a desk on my own element of my work.
Would you like to share any more details about the group or community you hope to work with?
Cymraeg is a living community language where I live, though everyone is bilinguagl. When (mainly monoglot) English speakers move in many wish to learn the language, but sometimes find it hard, for several reasons, to use what they learn in lessons or online "out in the wild" so to speak. The group I'll be working with will be composed of people who are either learning the language and wish to practice, or more fluent speakers who are happy to help others with their Cymraeg/Welsh as they also take part in the January Challenge alongside them.
Finish the sentence. 'Creativity Is...'
