A Word-less Construction

Day 7: A Word-less Construction

Welsh translation: Creadigaeth ddi-eiriau

Day 7: A Word-less Construction

“I’m Rachel and I run boom saloon, a global media movement to democratise creativity for good. Boom Saloon work in collaboration with STAND, a peer support group for people living with young onset dementia – that is people who are diagnosed with dementia under the age of 65 – and their families and friends in Fife, Scotland. Boom Saloon have been working with STAND since 2019 to support them tell the true story of those living with young onset dementia, in their own words .”

Let’s reimagine what a ‘poem’ is and have some fun! Poems, at their core, are a collection of words brought together and constructed into a form. For many, terms such as ‘poetry’ and ‘creative writing’ can feel intimidating; for others, words may simply be inaccessible. Today, we’ll create a word-less ‘poem’ by playing with objects to construct a physical form. This reminds us that creativity can take any shape; it needn’t be prescriptive or expected!

“Fi yw Rachel ac rwy’n rhedeg boom saloon, mudiad cyfryngau byd-eang i ddemocrateiddio creadigrwydd er budd da. Mae boom saloon yn gweithio mewn cydweithrediad â STAND, grŵp cymorth cyfoedion i bobl sy’n byw gyda dementia cychwyn cynnar – hynny yw pobl sy’n cael eu diagnosio â dementia o dan 65 oed – a’u teuluoedd a’u ffrindiau yn Fife, yr Alban. Mae boom saloon wedi bod yn gweithio gyda STAND ers 2019 i’w cefnogi i adrodd stori wir y rhai sy’n byw gyda dementia cychwyn cynnar, yn eu geiriau eu hunain.”

Do

Day 7 - Boom Saloon

Gather any objects you have around you – stationary, books, tables, bags – don’t worry what the objects are as this is all part of the fun.

Using any means possible, construct a form from these objects. You might tape them together, you might build the tallest tower, you might create a bridge.

Challenge yourself to push your construction as far as you can, whether that’s via height, length or combination of multiple materials. (Here’s where friendly competition might be fun!)

You may want to gather your objects first and think about what you’d like to construct – and how – before you begin, or make it up as you go along.

Beth am ail-ddychmygu beth yw ‘cerdd’ a chael ychydig o hwyl!

Yn sylfaenol cerdd yw casgliad o eiriau wedi’u dwyn at ei gilydd a’u ffurfio’n rhywbeth. Gall y termau ‘barddoniaeth’ ac ‘ysgrifennu creadigol’ ddychryn llawer o bobl; ac i eraill gall defnyddio geiriau fod yn amhosib.

Heddiw byddwn yn creu ‘cerdd’ ddi-eiriau trwy chwarae efo gwrthrychau a chreu ffurf gorfforol. Mae hyn yn ein hatgoffa y gall creadigrwydd ymddangos mewn unrhyw siâp; does dim rhaid iddo fod yr hyn sy’n cael ei argymell na’r hyn sy’n ddisgwyliedig!

Casglwch wahanol bethau sydd o’ch amgylch – os yn y gegin efallai y bydd gennych felin bupur, torth o fara ac amserydd wyau. Os wrth eich desg, efallai bydd llyfr nodiadau, styffylwr a phensel. Peidiwch â phoeni pa wrthrychau, mae hynny’n rhan o’r hwyl.

Gan ddefnyddio unrhyw ddull crëwch rywbeth o’r gwrthrychau hyn. Efallai eu cysylltu â thâp, efallai creu tŵr uchel, neu bont. Heriwch eich hun i wthio’r ffiniau, boed o ran uchder, hyd neu sawl defnydd sydd yn cael ei ddefnyddio.

Think

Terms such as poetry and creative writing can feel incredibly daunting – they are filled with stanzas and haikus and villanelles, written by people such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Yeats. And yet… at their core, they are nothing more than the words we each use day in, day out. These three Word Play prompts encourage and guide you to think about the words that surround us each day and how we can play with them to discover that, in fact – we are all poets, even if we didn’t know it!

Mae termau megis barddoniaeth ac ysgrifennu creadigol yn gallu bod yn frawychus – yn llawn o englynion a chywyddau a chynganeddion, ac wedi’u hysgrifennu gan bobl fel Gerallt Lloyd Owen, Mererid Hopwood a Cynan. Ac eto… yn y bôn, tydyn nhw’n ddim byd ond y geiriau rydym yn eu defnyddio bob dydd. Mae’r tair her Chwarae efo Geiriau hyn yn eich annog a’ch arwain i feddwl am y geiriau sydd yn ein hamgylchynu bob dydd a sut y gallwn chwarae â hwy er mwyn darganfod ein bod i gyd, go iawn, yn feirdd o ryw fath!
